Crap. Chris Henry Has Died.

henryGeez.  Chris Henry, who was in a car accident yesterday and fought all night for his life, has now died, according to Yahoo Sports.

This is awful.  It doesn’t matter what came before this, no 26-year-old deserves to die.

I feel bad for his family, his teammates, and the girl he reportedly got engaged to yesterday.

R.I.P. Chris.

The broken arm was bad enough for a player who had just started to hit his stride and stay out of trouble. Everyone around him has talked recently about how he’s changed his attitude since getting resigned and how he’s become a different person now with his kids and fiance having a huge impact on him. He’s been one of the least responsible players in the NFL in recent history, but he was finally turning it all around and making a difference, which is a story the NFL really needed. It’s a sad day for the league and for Henry’s friends and family.

Tiger Woods must be the only person happy to hear this news.

What Tom said… it looked like he was finally getting it this season and was making the most of his second chance. If he had turned his career around he could have been an inspiration to so many people…

And it’s probably a bit improper to ask, but… is this going to be a PQE?

Really not sure what to do. I hate the idea of awarding points for it–kind of takes a fun game and makes it sad–and there isn’t technically a PQE for this (there’s one for a player being murdered, though).

But, I know I’ve got a couple hundred players who are really into the game and this kind of thing could make or break them.

It probably should trigger something, but I’m not in a place where I can really make that decision right now, because it’s still so recent and so tragic.

Be curious to know how you guys feel.

I would say in the spirit of this game we should, but if there’s any hesitation to award these points then all participants should be asked to cast a vote on the matter. This could be a private e-mail survey or a public post on the site, but make sure that a consensus agree on some course of action, so that it can be presented as “This is what you want, so this is what we’ll do,” so that anyone who believes it is in bad taste can say so.

Yeah, most of the people I’ve talked to offlibe who joined this league with me agree on taking the high road on this one. Points for the domestic dispute would’ve been fun, but when a young kid loses his life as a result its a real tragedy and is in no way part of the enjoyment of this league.

  7. JD says:

The thing is – the league already awards points for tragedies like athletes getting robbed, murdered, suffering massive injuries, etc. Ostensibly, those acts are also through no fault of their own. When we get points for those we are essentially celebrating another’s loss.

Right now the PQE policy seems to be: if it makes the news, it’s worth points. The difference with the Henry case is that this is the first time that an actual life has been lost, rather than just severe personal injury (besides the case of the undrafted Ravens rookie who died of a drug overdose in the preseason).

I think either we can draw an arbitrary line for which cases are severe enough not to qualify for a PQE and which aren’t, or perhaps we could do away with all the PQEs that aren’t the fault of the athlete (ie, robbings, being murdered, injuries). In the case of this season I feel it’s proper to award the points and lay down a clear policy on this for next season.

All very good points. I hope you saw my latest post on the main page and took the time to vote your preference… thanks for your well-reasoned thoughts.
