How Should Fantasy UnSports Treat The Chris Henry Issue?

voteI’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this lately.  I have gotten emails from players that are adamant that points be awarded.  I have just as many emails from players saying it would go against the spirit of the game to award points for this.

I have to admit, I tend toward the latter.  This game was designed to make fun of millionaire athletes doing stupid things, and to celebrate their misbehavior… not to celebrate a death.

There is also no PQE for someone dying (though I do stupidly have one in there for a player being murdered).  That’s splitting hairs, sure… because I’ve created new PQEs all season long when something happens that wasn’t already on my list.  But maybe I’m willing to split hairs to remain on the side of thinking we should leave it alone.

But, this game is also all about you guys… the players.  So, I decided to let you vote.  Please help me know the wishes of the Fantasy UnSports community by casting a vote below.  I would also appreciate any added thoughts you might have on the matter if you want to put them in the comments section below.

Also, please don’t abuse the voting system just to help get your team some points.  I am no rocket scientist, but I can tell when someone’s voting multiple times to boost a particular answer.  And if I have to throw all the results out and go with my own gut, I will.  I am hoping this poll can help accurately reflect the community’s feelings on the issue.

So please let me know how you feel about it:

Personally, I think if the difference between someone going from 8th place to 1st is just this event, it should be considered or have an asterisk on the winners as a split decision (have joint winners). I don’t know the best solution, I know it would be frustrating to have him and not get points if it would win me the league, but I tend to side with not awarding points because of the gravity of the situation and how tragic it was.

I’m all for making fun of players for shooting themselves in the leg in public, getting suspended for drugs, or for throwing a pass with such force that player’s arm literally rips off and flies downfield…but this is the line, in my opinion.

Yeah, I’m leaning that way. Going to leave the voting open for another day or so, but the voting is leaning this way as well.

Doesn’t seem as fun to award points and cheer ourselves for a tragic death.

Last thing I want to do is upset someone who would have won if these points were awarded…

I’m a sarcastic guy who enjoys poking fun at stupid athletes, but at the end of the day I have to live with myself, and I guess I’m just human enough to have a problem with it.

I am out of the race to win, but the way I see it, Chris Henry went through a lot in his life, and from the stories I have been reading, he was trying his best to change. I don’t think poking fun at his tragic death, regardless of if it helps someone win, is the right thing to do. Also if I knew someone was going to argue that they lost because they didn’t get points because of his death, then I wouldn’t have signed up for this. I’m a with the commissioner. We can all laugh when someone makes it rain, shoots himself in the leg, or chokes their Asian midget girlfriend, but let Chris Henry be.

[...] Voting has been enabled for 2 days now, and roughly 10% of you have weighed in.  I’m not sure if that means the rest of you don’t care, or if it means we have 180 players who aren’t paying much attention to the game.  Either way, I’ve seen enough.  The votes are 2-to-1 against awarding points.
